universal studios singapore

Posted in family, personal by Jenny on May 24, 2010

So here I am at Universal Studios again, 2 years since I visited the one at California. Wow, 2 years already? ALREADY? Wow.

Singapore is just really NOT SUITABLE for a theme park. It was so freaking hot I wanted to collapse! Pity the character mascots because it must have been doubly hot for them.

I don’t know why the park even bothered opening when so many of the star attractions are not ready yet. No Transformers simulation ride (USA’s version is The Simpsons Ride, which is mad awesome), no Battlestar Galactica, no Rapids Adventures at Jurassic Park, no Stage 28™ (the place where they show you how visual/audio effects are made).

The Revenge of the Mummy ride (an indoor roller coaster in the dark) was opened though..but I didn’t take it hahahahaha.

I remember throwing a huge hissy fit 2 years ago in USA because I couldn’t take any of the rides (due to my physical condition)..I still feel very apologetic to the person who had to accompany me that whole day. I remember him telling me, “Don’t be sad.. It’s okay..We can always come again in the future to take the rides.” Haha. Oh well. *shrugs* Sometimes life plays out differently.

Anyway the reason I didn’t take the ride this time round – my sisters wussed out..and they were highly uncomfortable with me taking the ride when they saw the health hazards on the warning board. I even asked the ride usher to describe the ride for me and my sisters to ease their mind..but they ended up being even more worried. The usher didn’t really want me to take the ride either.

Strangely enough, I just said, “ok” and moved on. I was a bit disappointed, yes, but there was no point in being annoyed. Either I have matured a lot, or I’m just too jaded – or maybe the weather was too damn hot for me to even try persuade my sisters. I just wanted to sit down in an air-con room ASAP.

My favourite ride from Universal Studios USA – the Studio Tour (where they bring you to all the famous filming locations like Wisteria Lane on Desperate Housewives and the destroyed Boeing-747 for War of the Worlds) is also missing from USS, because obviously it will cost a bomb to replicate everything..and it has zero significance since filming doesn’t take place in Singapore. Boo.

I know I ranted a lot..but I did have fun lah. Everybody in the park was great..all of the ride operators, restaurant workers, ushers, mascots – they were all happy, helpful, polite, and enthusiastic. Awesome! It’s not easy being so service-oriented in Singapore’s blazing summer weather – it was 36 degree Celsius!

And I’ve always loved theme parks. When I answer stupid romance questionnaires with questions like ‘What’s your idea of a perfect date?’, I’ll always tick ‘A day at the theme park’. Screw those stupid romantic dinners or walks by the beach.

The Transformers simulation ride will only open in early 2011, so visit the park after that. And don’t visit it in summer.

Resorts World Sentosa’s Casino. No money to go in, not interested, and will never pay the entry fee of $100 to the bloodsucking corporation. And I have read enough bad reports about the casino and its patrons.

I salute anyone who is able to take a good photo of this USS globe without anyone else ruining the shot.

Hollywood

New York

Lights, Camera, Action!™ Hosted by Steven Spielberg

I was very happy because this is DIFFERENT from USA’s! If I remember correctly, the USA version shows a volcanic/fiery explosion. This is more of a hurricane attack. Very cool. I had to hold on to my hat the entire time to prevent it from flying off. The New York skyline looks very realistic in the studio!

So chaotic I couldn’t even take a clear photo.

Ancient Egypt

Revenge of the Mummy™

Wow this Pharaoh guy gave  me SUCH A HUGE FRIGHT. He came silently from behind and just SUDDENLY squat to my eye level and stared at me straight in the face with his blue eyes!!! I jumped back HAHAHAHA.

And he kept following me around and kept staring at me. I think he wants me to be his Egyptian wife? HAHAHAHA. And he’s super sweaty omg (T_T) not his fault really..since it was so hot..but I’m germophobic!!!! Wiped my hands like crazy after taking the photo.

Sci-Fi City™: Battlestar Galactica™ – the tallest dual-coaster in the world.
The blue track is called ‘Cyclon’ – the insane one with your legs dangling freely in the air. The red track is ‘Human’ – just as crazy, if not crazier – but a seated version.

The HUGE pizza at Loui’s NY Pizza Parlor™. Even the food at USS is Americanised. I couldn’t even finish ONE slice.

Madagascar™

To my utmost shock and dismay..BOTH MY SISTERS HAVE NEVER BEEN ON THE MERRY-GO-ROUND before in their lives because they think it’s embarrassing! What! Seriously! Why are people so uptight about image impression these days? I dragged both of them and my brother-in-law (who took it before with me in Disneyland hahaha!) to the King Julien’s Beach Party-Go-Round™. I think my sisters ended up having quite a bit of fun, as much as they didn’t want to admit it.

Lighten up people! Theme parks are the only places where it’s okay to be a kid again!

My disgruntled brother-in-law.

HAPPY I’M HAPPY! I LOVE MERRY-GO-ROUNDS!

PUSS IN BOOTS!!! I wanted to take a photo with him the MOST!!! (T_T) But by the time I rushed to the queue, it was closed.. urghhhh. The mascots in USS stay for like a maximum of 10 minutes?? It’s really short as compared to the ones in USA, I don’t know why…maybe cause it’s really way too hot for them to stay any longer.

And lol at the Harry Potter kid aspiring to be a Qudditch Seeker. The girl didn’t want to let go of Puss in Boots too. So innocent~~~

Far Far Away™..at the Shrek castle I suppose? Or is it Princess Fiona’s castle?

Imitation FAIL HAHAHA! Don’t have round eyes that are as big as Puss in Boots.

And I didn’t buy a single thing from USS! (My sisters spent quite a bit.) I resent whoever calls me a shopaholic. Ok lah, I’m one.

The Lost World™

Didn’t take a single ride here because all the queues were so looooooooooooooooong!!!!!!

And so bloody hoooooooooooooot!!!

Zero mood for rides.

Want to have a go at this?  Wait 70 minutes under the scorching hot Singapore sun.

Hmmmm everything looks the same as the USA’s one..but somehow something was lacking..I don’t know. I think it’s unfair for me to pass a judgement since it’s my second time watching it. The audience seemed to have enjoyed it though. And I love that they brought the insane water-spraying of the audience over to Singapore too!

Walked back to Hollywood in the late afternoon…the park is not very big.

Hehe. :D

HAHAHA I LOVE THIS!! This silly Kung Fu Panda was trying to ballet-dance with me and he NEARLY FELL DOWN cause his costume is so heavy!!! HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

And he’s rock-hard okay!! Aww damn painful cause he hugged me pretty close..nearly crushed me. BUT HE’S SO CUTE!!! FAVOURITE!!!

When I saw this jukebox in Mel’s Drive-In™ I freaked out! I thought it works!! I was so happy because it’s full of retro songs!

Bah, it doesn’t work. Should’ve guessed.

I had a great time! Is HAPPY! Mega-love theme parks!

Bye!

Second sister to me: Why you still hugging that rabbit everywhere you go?

Me: Why cannot.

Second sister: Keep it away lah.

Brother-in-law: Oye! The rabbit is innocent. How you say innocent in Chinese? ..

Second sister: 无辜。

Brother-in-law: Ya ya. The 兔子是无辜的!!

Mom and me: LOL

Second sister: *roll eyes*

My brother-in-law is possibly the sweetest, kindest, most fantastic man on the planet.

He is always impossibly doting and loving towards my sister. Even when he is very tired or busy with his flights, he still makes sure that he comes over to spend some time with my sister (sometimes he starts falling asleep just 10 minutes after reaching our house). Being busy is never an excuse for him to discount anything from his relationship with my sister. My sister is always his first priority in life. He has always been exceedingly nice to me too..and I think he is a perfect 10 husband.

His little surprise performance on stage left my sister in tears and the rest of the ladies in the ballroom reeling with envy. Awwwwwwww MAX. So happy for my sister! She got hitched to the best man out there, lucky girl! Congratulations!

And they actually got an ATC to record “DS 989, cleared for takeoff” and played it at the beginning of the dinner. HAHA, so silly.

On a side note, many people kept making these comments to me that day: “One more to go!!”, “Haha you’re the last one in the family, when is yours going to be?”

Zzzzzzzz.. My parents probably have to wait many more years for another wedding in the family. I actually caught the bouquet that my sister threw out, but I gave it away to another girl, LOLLLL. I didn’t want it at all. I knew it would be a waste for the bouquet to end up in my hands anyway.

The lady at the shop was telling my mom, “Wah you got three daughters? Two already married? So lucky.”

My brother-in-law replied jokingly, “Two down..one to go.”

Hah……….
