I have been a fan of Jones Shi 石康钧 since his debut album..he is, in my opinion, the MOST underappreciated Singaporean singer ever. His voice has a tremendous range (19 notes)..but of course, mere range does not equate to him being a good singer. Jones Shi also has an exceptionally emotive and explosive voice, and when he sings, you can’t help but be amazed at how he never made it big in Taiwan or Singapore. Some of his songs, like his first single 火光, make me tear no matter how many times I’ve listened to them.

His name used to be ‘石康軍’, so YouTube that name for his early works. I have his first album, and I swear to god, every single song is single-promotion material. And I’m not just saying this because he is a cutie pie.

I was lucky enough to interview him on a one-to-one basis 3 years ago. He was extremely humble and down-to-earth. I remember asking him (while simultaneously gushing non-stop over him) when will he release an album again, and he just said he doesn’t know..(because record companies are obviously profit-driven..) After the interview, he signed my album and said sincerely, “Please continue supporting me, I really appreciate it.”

…..Aw.

How can you not support such a polite, talented, and handsome young Singaporean man?

Thanks to my friend, I got to see the winner of Taiwan’s popular singing contest One Million Star – Yoga Lin.

Spotted a huge lantern on the way there.

And since I was in the area…I pulled my friend to visit Pet Safari with me..and ~~**~**~Japanese Spitz!! So cuteee gahh~ Talked about keeping a dog with my mom and I got the same answer that I’ve been getting for the past 24 years – “No.”

Finally got to the showcase area..and waited almost 40 minutes for the singer to show up. Why hah? Why are celebrities ALWAYS LATE? I’ve never met a celebrity who arrived on time for his/her interview before, and they are always late for their concerts!

The best was probably Jason Mraz, who was only 10 minutes late in opening his show. The worst..wow..so many..but at the top of my head – Jolin Tsai. I think I waited one full hour for her interview to commence, and 1.5 hours for her music showcase. Sigh. Hate people with no sense of punctuality. They think the whole world revolves around them.

So anyway..he finally appeared to loud screams everywhere.

I was never a fan of the singing show, and so naturally I’m not a fan of his…especially since he exudes zero personality on variety shows – he’s super boring to watch.

But Yoga Lin turned out to be completely different live! He became this emo-drama-mama singer and was jumping around the stage like someone on crack. Surprise surprise! And he has got some real vocal skills. (Duh..he’s not the winner for nothing I guess.)

The showcase lasted only about 1 hour..I thought he was pretty funny because he actually SCOLDED his own fans for being recording freaks! His fans right up in the front rows were recording/snapping photos non-stop throughout the whole showcase and it really got on his nerves. Well, he makes a valid point..why pay so much to see your idol THROUGH the camera lens for the entire concert? (-_-”")..

Okay bye!

Posted in music by Jenny on January 23, 2010

Beyond

Posted in music by Jenny on January 20, 2010

The band debuted back in 1983 and I’ve been listening to them since I was a toddler. My sister was a huge fan of the band, and she collected every single video and cassette tape released by Beyond. I used to spend hours and hours in front of the mini-radio and television with my sister, learning the lyrics to Beyond’s songs, and belting them out in perfect Cantonese (I think my Cantonese was way better when I was a kid). My sister had a crush on Yip Sai Wing (the drummer), while I had crushes on the guitarists Wong Ka Keung and Paul Wong hahahahahaha. I think Paul Wong is aging really nicely now, I’ll probably still hyperventilate if I ever get the chance to see him up close.

If you have never listened to Beyond, then maybe you should start listening to at least one of their songs. Beyond is undeniably the rock legend of Hong Kong’s pop golden era during the early 90s. They dominated all the music charts across Asia and starred in numerous movies..very much like what The Beatles did for the UK and USA. I remember watching their comedy film ‘开心鬼救开心鬼’ over and over again, until my sister told me to stop playing the tape. The band believed strongly in the themes of love, peace, and charity..so their songs are mostly centred around humanitarian causes or full of optimism.

When lead singer/writer/guitarist Wong Ka Kui died in 1993 due to internal brain injuries (he fell off from a 3-metre stage while filming a game show in Japan), the whole of Hong Kong went into a long period of mourning. Both my sister and I fell into mild depression for a few days after the horrific news broke out. :(

Beyond never regained their glory or musical achievements after he died, and the band had their last concert back in 2005 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. I went for the first and last Beyond concert of my life and it was the most explosive concert I’ve ever been to..PURE ROCK!!! I think I went a bit deaf after the concert ended. They are the kind of musicians who actually sound better LIVE, as compared to recordings..pure talent. Their songs never get old. This is a band which sells out every single concert in Hong Kong and in Asia. Their concert halls are always jammed pack..and it’s really not a surprise why they were so popular.

My favourite Beyond song of all time – 不再猶豫

The song is dedicated to Nelson Mandela, also one of their biggest hits –

The song Wong Ka Kui is most well-known for, also often played during his funeral or whenever the media reports on him – 海闊天空. This touching rendition is sung by his little brother Wong Ka Keung. Cry max.

Not only are they good at meaningful songs, they excel at love ballads too – 喜欢你

情人 by Paul Wong. Every single member in Beyond can sing..Yip Sai Wang doesn’t sing as much though, as he’s quite shy about his vocals.

And lastly, if you know how to sing in Cantonese, this will be the best song to sing to your mom.. Best song for mothers, ever.

I hope YouTube never ever take down these videos because of copyright. Copyright is such a selfish capitalist ideology in modern society. If YouTube takes down these videos, then there will be lesser people who will get to know about great bands like Beyond, there will be lesser people who will be inspired by them, there will be lesser people who will try to make music like Beyond. Copyright is evil.

Buy this DVD! Guaranteed 2 hours of pure happiness!

Contrary to what people might think, I’m Yours is in no way my favourite Jason Mraz song. Just ask any of his die-hard fans and you will realise that he has sooo many songs that are better than I’m Yours in his repertoire. I’m Yours just happened to be the one song that struck a chord with the radio listeners.

I couldn’t care less if he leaves out this song from his concert set list. But he has an obligation to sing it all the time because it’s a guaranteed crowd-pleaser.

Unfortunately, many of his best songs were never officially released on CD. It’s sad how so many people only know him for I’m Yours. What a huge waste..he is so much more than that.

can anybody find me somebody to love!

Posted in music by Jenny on December 21, 2009

I feel strongly compelled to write about this amazing, amazing song by Queen. When I heard the tribute version by George Michael, I completely fell in love with the 1976 song. I can listen to it for 50 times a day without ever getting sick of it. The first five seconds of the piano opening got me hook, line, and sinker.

Love the piano opening, love the lyrics, love the meaning behind the words, love the bridge, love the chorus, love the guitar riff, love the drum solo, love the song!!! Genius, genius, genius! They just don’t make music like that anymore these days. I’m so sick of all the crap I hear on the radio and see on MTV nowadays.

I love going to concerts, and what I wouldn’t give to be part of that Freddie Mercury tribute concert! It must be so awesome to hear George Michael belt out this song live. The audience response to the tribute was fantastic. Watch..listen..and the goosebumps will follow.

Queen feat. George Michael – Somebody To Love
London – Wembley Stadium – 1992
Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert

Enhanced studio album version of George Michael’s tribute:

Or if you just want to soak in the pure genius of Freddie Mercury, here’s the original. I’m surprised he’s still able to sing, judging by the amount of alcohol on his piano.

Can anybody find me somebody to love
Each morning I get up and die a little
Can barely stand on my feet
Take a look at yourself in the mirror and cry
Lord what you’re doing to me
I have spent all my years in believing you
But I just can’t get no relief, Lord!
Somebody, somebody!
Somebody, somebody!
Can anybody find me somebody to love?

Genius rendition of I’m Yours on the Ukulele

Posted in music by Jenny on December 12, 2009

LOL at this 5-year-old Japanese boy still singing and playing even though that itch is obviously killing him. He’s sooo cute!!! I can’t stop watching this video!

If I ever have a son, the first thing I’ll buy him will be a guitar or a piano..I’m sure he’ll have no problems with chicks later in life. I swear I’ll die of ecstasy if a guy sings a love song to me.

And oh my god, this kid is simply amazing at The Beatles. Such a talent! Apparently he learnt how to play the ukulele via NHK’s music programme and has no professional training. Wow, he’s going to grow up and be so awesome if he continues with this.

AOL released its latest list of the Top 100 Songs from the ’80s.

Oh my god I love lists like this!!! I’m a HUGE HUGE retro music fan, so music from the ’60s to ’90s makes me super happy. Don’t Stop Believin’ is number 1, but I don’t feel that it’s there based purely on artistic merit. Since the list is America-based, we must take into account that there has been a huge revival of this song recently, thanks to the popular drama Glee. I got a feeling that if the song wasn’t featured on that show, or used as the theme song for Adam Sandler’s movie Bedtime Stories (which was quite a good popcorn flick), it wouldn’t have ranked so high.

Tommy Tutone’s Jenny 867-5309 is on the list too! I still remember how the chefs back in Grand Canyon always used to sing this song to me. Hahaha ♥♥

And I think it’s ridiculous that a-ha’s Take on Me is ranked so high. FAIL. Duran Duran/The Police/Michael Jackson/Chicago/Spandau Ballet all need to be higher than a-ha. And why isn’t there any sight of Wham!’s Freedom?! I freaking love that song!

This list is not very legit, but it’s still a pretty good guide to ’80s music.

I wish I was born in the 80s.

Oh wait, I was born in the 80s.

AOL – Our Top 100 ’80s Songs cover everything from rock, to hair-ballads, and yes, even synth-pop.
But the band that reigned the ’80s was none other than Journey, who is responsible for seven hit songs on our
list and proudly holds the No. 1 spot with the party anthem ‘Don’t Stop Believin’.Def Leppard has four hits on the list (mostly from ‘Hysteria’),
followed by Prince, Tears for Fears, Hall & Oates, Phil Collins, Heart, and Michael Jackson with three songs each.
Even though Tommy Tutone only appears once on the list, everyone knows Jenny’s number by heart.

all you need is love

I saw the following tweet by Yoko Ono, and was taken aback by how sweet John Lennon was.

John used to say “I love you” every day. I didn’t understand then, how lucky I was. – Yoko Ono

She was really, really lucky.
